This week Havering Council have launched a consultation into the future of libraries and children’s services across the borough. The council have made a commitment to continue providing services, but the nature of their delivery is open for comment.

Libraries

Similar to the model now used by Barking and Dagenham, one of the options would be to have volunteers run half of the libraries, making them community led. Libraries being considered for this model in the south are Elm Park and South Hornchurch.

Children’s Centres

Between April 2010 and June 2013 Ofsted the official body for inspecting schools embarked on a review of children’s centres up and down the country. Out of 152 areas and over 1750 centres inspected, the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham came out on top as providing the best services. Nearly a year on, Ofsted have returned and the latest inspection saw the Leys Children’s Centre in Dagenham Village achieve yet another Outstanding.
