Jon Cruddas, MP for Dagenham and Rainham, has praised new powers for TfL to crack down on illegal taxi and private hire activity and enhance passenger safety. These new powers are part of the Mayor of London’s Taxi and Private Hire Action Plan, which will drive up standards, boost the quality of service for Londoners and will help deliver the greenest taxi fleet in the world.

Transport for London (TfL) licenses and regulates taxi and private hire services in London. As part of this, they set the maximum fares that taxis (black cabs) can charge. These fares are determined by tariffs that are reviewed each year and normally updated to reflect changes in a Cost Index which tracks year on year changes to the costs of operating a taxi in London.
