The number of unemployed claimants in Dagenham and Rainham constituency in December 2013 was 2,383. This represents a rate of 4.9% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64, the 178th highest of the 650 UK constituencies. (1st = highest rate of unemployment, 650th = lowest rate of unemployment.)

Jon Cruddas MP has been contacted by many residents within Rainham and Wennington over the past few months regarding proposals to establish a Gravel and Mineral Extraction site on East Hall Farm in the heart of Wennington.

Havering Aggregates Limited, the company behind the proposals, are hosting a public exhibition of its planning application proposals for the site. The exhibition will be held at The Church of St Mary & St Peter, Wennington Road, in Wennington between 9:30am and 5pm on Saturday 1st February.

It’s a new year and the Tory-led coalition is introducing yet another hike in travel costs across the capital. The fares across busses, overground, underground and rail services are set to rise by up to 3.1 per cent on Sunday 19th January. Not only will this rise in fares put the local residents further out of pocket, but with job losses at the ticket offices people are essentially paying more for less.

It’s that time of year again and I would like to take this opportunity to wish every family, community and neighbourhood in Dagenham, Rainham, South Hornchurch and Elm Park a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.

I know that for many in the constituency, 2013 was a year of hard times. With government cuts introduced in April, and the cost of living rising above wages my office has been working to make sure people don’t fall through the cracks, helping as many as we can.

Last Friday Jon Cruddas MP for Dagenham and Rainham held his much anticipated Christmas card prize event. With 10 local schools and businesses from all over the constituency, this year was bigger than ever. Over 150 people attended the event, including the 21 school winners and runners up, the two over all runners up and this year’s winner Neda Lajauskaite age 10 from William Bellamy School.

Ingrebourne Valley Ltd have recently revealed plans to use land at Wennington Village for a new gravel extraction site. The Mineral extraction site is being proposed for the 25 hectares of land adjacent to the A1306 opposite the new Links Golf Course which is currently being built.

On Wednesday 27th November, Jon Cruddas MP was joined by local ward councillors and a delegation of local residents in order to present the 10,000 strong petition against the prison proposals at City Hall.
Over the past few weeks, following the success of last years competition, Jon’s constituency office has been filling up with thousands of bright, creative and innovative Christmas cards designed by pupils from all corners of the constituency; Dagenham, Rainham, South Hornchurch and Elm Park.
The latest statistics are very positive and could mark a turning point in the local economy. This month Dagenham and Rainham has the lowest rate of claimants since 2010. However there is still work to be done.

The prison campaign continues

It was announced today that four prisons across the country are to close in alignment with the building of a new super-prison in Wales. The 2,000 capacity prison to be built in the Wrexham area is the first part of a massive revamp of HM Prison Service; officials are also looking at many other sites, of which the Beam Park site in Dagenham and Rainham has still not been ruled out.
