This week it was announced by the Department of Work and Pensions that the Dagenham Jobcentre Plus, Chequers Lane, will move to Barking five miles away.

The total number of unemployed claimants in Dagenham and Rainham constituency in November 2016 was 1,635. This represents a rate of 3.3% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64, the 162nd highest of the 650 UK constituencies. (1st = highest claimant rate, 650th = lowest claimant rate.) The equivalent UK claimant rate was 2.4%.

This includes 1,162 people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance and 473 people claiming Universal Credit who were required to seek work.

The total number of unemployed claimants in Dagenham and Rainham constituency in September 2016 was 1,612. This represents a rate of 3.2% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64, the 174th highest of the 650 UK constituencies. (1st = highest claimant rate, 650th = lowest claimant rate.) The equivalent UK claimant rate was 2.4%.

Back in 2011/12 local resident Dean Haxell was made redundant due to the closure of the Remploy factory in Barking which offered employment to workers with disabilities. The closure of the factory had a huge impact locally and Jon Cruddas MP fought the closures at the time.
