World Suicide Prevention Day is an awareness day to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides. Every year organisations and communities around the world come together to raise awareness of how we can create a world where fewer people die by suicide.

Each year has a different theme and focus, to bring to light a specific aspect of suicide prevention. Every year Samaritans campaigns with over 70 other suicide prevention and mental health groups under the National Suicide Prevention Alliance (NSPA).

 

This week (Sept 7 – Sept 13) is Air Ambulance Week which is an opportunity for all the UK’s air ambulance charities to celebrate their life-saving services. For London’s Air Ambulance Charity, this will be the first large scale fundraising opportunity since the pandemic.

Jon Cruddas MP has been a long-time supporter of the London Air Ambulance and has worked to raise awareness and in 2016 promoted their fundraising campaign to purchase a second helicopter.

 

On Thursday 27th August it was announced that Barking and Dagenham will be hosting three Covid-19 testing sites. The first testing site at Mayesbrook Park Car Park, Lodge Avenue, Dagenham RM8 2JR opened last week, Thursday 3rd September. The site is open from 8am-8pm every day.

Over the last few weeks Jon Cruddas MP has been contacted by concerned residents in Mark’s Gate regarding ongoing development works around the Billet Road area. Resident’s of Coral Close and Uplands Road allege that Redbridge Council failed to consult ahead of a large residential development being approved in 2018 which is now having serious implications on noise levels, traffic congestion, air quality and the environment. 

 

Jon Cruddas MP has received an update from the Crossrail Ltd Board following this week’s announcement that the central section of the Elizabeth Line could not open in summer 2021.

The Board explained that delivery of the Elizabeth line is now in its final stages and is being completed at a time of great uncertainty due to the risks associated with further Covid outbreaks. 

 

Following the flash floods over the weekend Jon Cruddas MP has been speaking to residents in Dagenham that were affected. It seems that there were very few severe incidents compared to those in the south of Havering, with the most widespread problem being caused to roads.

Jon has been liaising between the residents that suffered damage to their properties and Barking and Dagenham Council to get them the support they need.

This week in the wake of the A-Level results fiasco, Jon Cruddas MP contacted the Secretary of State for Education, Gavin Williamson, voicing his concerns. Tens of thousands of young people were left let down and perturbed due to the Government grading system which caused the widespread downgrading of results. 

 

The number of unemployed claimants in Dagenham and Rainham constituency in July 2020 was 6,445. This represents a rate of 9.2% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64. The equivalent UK claimant rate was 6.3%.

There are 3,710 more claimants than in March 2020 before the UK lockdown began and 345 more claimants than June 2020.

 

As schools prepare to return back after an extended break due to Covid-19, places for School Governors are opening up. National education charity ‘Governors for Schools’ have contacted Jon Cruddas MP as schools across Dagenham and Rainham are in need of committed and skilled volunteers.

Raising the quality of school governing boards improves the educational opportunities for young people. The expected challenges schools and young people will face following the pandemic mean that in the coming months schools will need assistance from effective governance more than usual.

 

Earlier this month, Jon Cruddas MP for Dagenham and Rainham added his name to a cross party campaign urging the Chancellor to ensure countries that are suffering from the economic fallout of Covid-19 pandemic are given the full debt cancellation they need to survive, recover and rebuild from this crisis.
