Over the last few weeks Jon Cruddas MP has been contacted by a number of residents who have received support from and praised the work of the Havering Volunteer Centre. This week Jon got in touch with the HVC for a short interview to find out how they have adapted their model to provide support for some of Havering's most vulnerable residents.

Since the beginning of the pandemic Tapestry-UK have been working tirelessly alongside Havering Council to ensure that support for the elderly and most vulnerable was in place. The charity has stepped up their operation to meet demand as the situation has shifted.

Tapestry is an innovative charity and ‘not for profit' social business working to provide appropriate, personalised and affordable care and support for adults and older people in the local community. They believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to live a healthy and connected life regardless of age or ability.

In light of the current Covid-19 crisis Jon Cruddas MP has been contacted by a number of organisations providing advice for constituents in a range of different circumstances. This week Jon was contacted by Diabetes UK who have provided specific advice for those living with diabetes across Dagenham, Rainham, South Hornchurch and Elm Park.

This month's ‘community focus' concentrates on an Essex Charity helping thousands of homeless people every single month. Friends of Essex & London Homeless are a local charity driven by one single goal: "to do their part in making the world a better place for all." They are a small group made up of volunteers who travel to central London every Wednesday evening to set up a ‘pop up' soup kitchen at Charing Cross, which ensures hundreds of homeless receive a hot meal.

The London based charity are aiming to raise £30,000 to support projects that keep young people in school and out of gangs. The event will also help raise awareness of the issues facing young people growing up in poverty.

Jon Cruddas MP has recently been contacted by The Silver Sunday Team regarding this years Silver Sunday which will be on Sunday 6 October. Silver Sunday is a special day in the national calendar established to celebrate older people.

The day is a chance for local businesses, charities, schools, faith and community groups to host events that champion older people and encourage other organisations to work closer with the ‘silver community'.

London City Airport has launched a new £75,000 Community Fund to support local charities and organisations that represent inclusive and diverse communities across East London.

Grants ranging from £300 to £3,000 are available for charities and not-for-profit organisations to enable significant and positive change for communities across East London Boroughs of Barking & Dagenham, Bexley, Epping Forest District Council, Greenwich, Hackney, Havering, Newham, Lambeth, Lewisham, Redbridge, Southwark, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest.

Last week – First Step, a local charity for disabled Children, announced that they need to raise £200,000 to avoid closure after losing funding from Havering Council.

The charity in Tangmere Crescent, Elm Park, has continued to provide support for hundreds of children with special needs and disabilities for many years and has become a vital part of the community.

In 2017 First Step lost funding from the local authority and has had to draw further into its charity reserves. The charity has now expressed three options on their future outcome:

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has announced the launch of a new initiative which will double the street outreach team and prepare severe weather shelters to open London-wide whenever freezing temperatures are forecast in a bid to help rough sleepers in the capital. Alongside this contactless donation points have been set up across London offering Londoners the chance to donate to homeless charity projects directly.
