Parliamentary Debate on Support for the Arts

This Thursday there will be a debate in parliament regarding government support for the arts. The debate was scheduled after over 175,000 people across the country signed a petition urging the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to increase their Covid-19 support package.

Back in July Jon Cruddas MP wrote to the Chancellor of the Exchequer urging the government to provide additional support for the arts, primarily the theatre and music industry. The letter was sent on behalf of The Broadway Theatre in Barking and The Queen's Theatre in Hornchurch, both of which provide entertainment for people living all across Dagenham and Rainham.

Jon Cruddas said: "the government plan to kick start the economy following national lockdown still fails to adequately support the arts. A number of larger theatres are beginning to safely return but there is a real concern that smaller local theatres will struggle to operate in a viable way. I'm glad this petition is being considered this week."

The debate will take place on Thursday. Over 100 local residents signed the parliamentary petition and Jon Cruddas has indicated that he will try to attend the debate subject to diary commitments.
