The government has consistently failed to protect consumers from rip-off energy prices, as a result we are now facing a cold homes crisis where over four million UK households are living in fuel poverty. This means that over four million households are unable to heat their homes adequately due to soaring prices which amount to more than 10 per cent of household income.

New data has revealed that new housing benefit applicants in Havering are having to wait almost three weeks for their claims to be processed. Last year, new claimants waited on average 19 days for their application to be completed.

Waiting time for applicants can be a very worrying time, with families fearful of notices of eviction if the application isn’t processed quick enough.

This week the residents of Dovers Farm Estate Green received the result of last month’s hearing regarding their ‘Village Green’ application to protect their community green.

The residents have fought off two attempts to develop the green in recent years with the help of Jon Cruddas MP, the first proposal came from Havering Council themselves and the second by a private developer.

The Safer Neighbourhood Board was set up as a forum for the community to discuss key issues facing the local area such as knife crime, acid attacks, moped crime and car theft. The board is responsible for monitoring police performance.

The SNB is attended by the police Borough Commander alongside representatives from other agencies and organisations in the community.

These meetings are an excellent opportunity for residents to come along and raise any concerns directly with the Borough Commander, and with other residents in the area.

Over the past few weeks, Jon Cruddas has received several emails from Rainham residents raising concerns about the recent closure of the mobility gate/ramp at Rainham C2C station.

Residents have expressed concerns that many passengers, including disabled passengers and parents with buggies will not be able to access Rainham Station for the next month, whilst a new ramp is installed. Staff at Rainham station have been approached about the issue by residents, in which the staff have informed commuters to simply make other arrangements and avoid Rainham C2C station.

For a limited time, households across Britain can have cavity wall and loft insulation installed for free by E.ON, regardless of whether E.ON is their energy supplier.

The insulation, which would usually cost around £775, is being offered for free to all homeowners, landlords and private tenants who have their landlord’s permission.

A typical family home could save up to £285 a year on their heating bills by installing both cavity wall and loft insulation, meaning people who take up the offer could save a total of more than £1,000.

Today is ‘Time to Talk’ Day 2018 – part of the Time to Change campaign. The day was established to help break down the stigmatisation and discrimination often faced by those living with mental ill health. Jon Cruddas MP for Dagenham and Rainham pledged his support for the campaign back in 2012, and thinks that campaigns surrounding mental health are becoming increasingly important.

The total number of unemployed claimants in Dagenham and Rainham constituency in December 2017 was 1,540. This represents a rate of 3.0% of the economically active population aged 16-64, the 208th highest of the 650 UK constituencies. (1st = highest claimant rate, 650th = lowest claimant rate.) The equivalent UK claimant rate was 2.5%. The UK unemployment rate, which includes people not claiming benefits and is estimated from survey data, was 4.3% between September and November 2017.
