An organisation established to campaign against cuts to school funding; School Cuts have launched a petition calling on Damien Hinds to properly fund SEND provision in all schools and colleges.
The petition explains that according to the Department for Education's own figures, more than 2,000 children in England with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) have no education provision at all.
Jon Cruddas MP has supported the petition stating that: "this is a shocking statistic, the Department of Education should be working towards delivering a fair and equal start for all children. That means ensuring that there are enough places, and that SEND provisions are properly funded."
Schools all across the country continue to face billions in budget cuts, and these cuts are leading to losses of staff, equipment and care required to safeguard children with the most complex needs. The cuts also mean that local authorities and schools are lacking the funding to deliver the right support for children with special educational needs and disabilities.
The Government is failing thousands of children who just want to learn.
The petition makes two key demands of the Secretary of State for Education:
- Properly fund SEND in all schools/colleges, ensuring no child has to wait for a place in school
- Give funding back to local authorities so they can commission SEND support and services in line with what children in their community need
