New flags for Dagenham War Memorials

Over the past few weeks many residents may have noticed that the Union Jack has been missing from both the Dagenham Heathway War Memorial at the corner of Church Elm Lane, and the Dagenham Village War Memorial by Dagenham Parish Church.

The flags at both sites are normally replaced every two years in November prior to Remembrance Day to prevent them appearing too tattered during the service. However earlier this year it was noticed that the new flags were becoming quite worn a year ahead of scheduled replacement.

Back in March councillor Lee Waker, who is a committee member of the local British Legion discussed early replacement with the then Chairperson of the Dagenham British Legion ? Colin Holleley. Colin sadly passed away quite recently.

Since then, Lee Waker along with ward colleagues, councillors Margaret Mullane, and Phil Waker have been liaising with the Dagenham British Legion to have new flags raised at both memorials.

The new flags have now arrived and due to the concern shown by residents will be reinstalled in a ceremonial flag raising on Monday 12th September at 4.00pm on the Village Green by Dagenham Parish Church. Residents are welcome to attend. For more information please contact councillor Lee Waker ? lee.waker@lbbd.gov.uk
