MP Calls on Havering Council to Save Our Libraries

Jon Cruddas, Labour MP for Dagenham and Rainham has formally submitted his objections to the proposals to close the South Hornchurch and Elm Park libraries that serve residents in his constituency.

Jon said “I recognise the extremely difficult financial position Havering Council is in. I held a debate in Parliament to bring attention to Havering’s dilemma and seek support from the Government last November. But there is a long term cost to short term savings. I want the Council to consider other options to closing the South Hornchurch and Elm Park libraries. I have asked them to follow the model of the new Rainham Library, bringing together a range of local public services with the library and help fund the cost with new homes as part of the development. I also asked that they explore switching to a financed volunteer led model providing community hub services that people rely on. The Robert Jeyes Library, now Chadwell Heath Community Centre is a perfect example of this.”

The draft library strategy sets out that, in order to save between £334,000 and £350,000 depending on which sites are decided upon, four of the 24 hour per week branch libraries should be proposed for closure. The libraries being considered for closure are; Collier Row, Elm Park, Gidea Park, Harold Wood, and South Hornchurch.

Jon went on to say “I am always struck by the number of people who are present at our libraries and as the Member of parliament I am urging Havering Council to reconsider its plans. It is essential that we do not simply manage decline in difficult circumstances, but explore every avenue to retain much loved services for future generations.” The consultation opened on Friday 10 May and closes on Friday 2 August. Jon Cruddas MP is encouraging all residents that value local libraries and rely on the services they provide to have their say.
