The Pen to Print Michael Feld Creative Writing Competition for Young People

The Writing Competition for young people is open for entries and we have an extra prize this year a set of books for the winners' school! Don't miss this great opportunity to win a great prize for yourself and your school! The closing date for entries is 16 April 2018, and entries can be sent to libraries@lbbd.gov.uk or dropped off at any library in Barking and Dagenham.

The competition is open to Young People in the following age groups who either live or go to school in Barking and Dagenham.

Primary competition For Years 4 to 6 (Age 8 to 11 years)
First prize: Kindle Fire for the winner and a selection of books for your school.
Four runners up prizes of £25 book token each.

Choose one of the three themes: (Poetry, Non-Fiction or Fiction) and write no more than 350 words

Secondary competition For Years 7 to 9 (Age 11 to 14 years)
First prize: Kindle Fire for the winner and a selection of books for your school.
Four runner-up prizes of £25 book token each.

Choose one of the three themes: (Poetry, Non-Fiction or Fiction) and write no more than 550 words.

  • Theme 1. Poetry - Write a poem either as a ballad, sonnet, rhyming couplet or blank verse.
  • Theme 2. Non-Fiction - Write about an inspirational woman from the past or present. Use your research skills to find information about your chosen woman and use this as a basis to write a newspaper report or imagined interview about them and tell us why you find them so inspirational.
  • Theme 3. Fiction - Write a story starting with the line: ?It was too important to ignore, I had to stand up and be counted?' You must start your story with this line, and please remember to give your story a title!

Competition Rules
All Entries should be double lined spaced, typed entries are preferred but not essential but handwriting must be easily read. Your stories will not be returned so make sure you keep a copy.

All Entries must include:

  1. A title for your writing
  2. Your name, your age and date of birth
  3. The name of your school
  4. Include with your entry your parent/carer's name with a contact number or email address. (Group entries sent to us on behalf of a school should also include the contact email or number for a member of staff. This can be on a separate cover sheet.)

Send your entries to libraries@lbbd.gov.uk or drop them off at any Barking and Dagenham library.
