The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Adult Social Care team along with the Council Volunteer Service have been focussing a lot on the older members of our community as these tough economic times take hold. We have just faced a winter where the question of ‘eating or heating’ was one faced by many across the country.
Jon Cruddas MP for Dagenham and Rainham said: “In times like this many people fall through the cracks in society and sadly it is usually the elderly members of the community. Locally we are seeing the prevalence of food banks which are now in the double figures across the constituency. With this in mind it is encouraging to see local businesses showing their support and understanding by providing special offers for the elderly, it highlights a real sense of community spirit in the local area.”
So to help ease some of the financial pressures on the older generation locally, the Barking and Dagenham Adult Commissioning team have worked with local providers to put together a list of food venues and other food services across the borough and branching into Havering. The services listed offer discounts to older people that are available on certain days of the weeks or at certain times.

People over 60 are also able to access all of the boroughs leisure facilities free of charge. Becontree Leisure Centre situated on Althorne Way near Dagenham Civic Centre currently runs an over 50’s work out and social session called ‘Elderberries’. It is a great opportunity for older local residents to socialise and meet new people.
