Local MP lends support to TUC campaign

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) have launched a campaign, Dying to Work, that aims to protect the jobs of the terminally ill. The Equality Act 2010 does not currently prevent employers from dismissing those with a terminal diagnosis if they fail a capability assessment that has been ?reasonably' adjusted.

The TUC want to implement a change that would mean critical illness would be recognised as a ?protected characteristic' preventing employees from dismissal for a guaranteed period. This would reduce financial uncertainty, safeguard any ?death in service' benefits and provide people with the choice of how to spend their final months.

Jon Cruddas MP for Dagenham and Rainham has given the TUC his full support: "This campaign ensures that those in their hour of most need are protected against the threat of job loss. This change to the law speaks directly to the values of equality and fairness held by our community. It is integral that employers come together joining other organisations and sign the voluntary charter to stop additional stress and worry regarding the employment of the terminally ill. I fully support this campaign."
