Launders Lane - Rainham Fire Update

Many constituents have contacted Jon Cruddas MP over the last few days raising their concerns about the fire on Launders Lane, Rainham. The fire started on Friday and has continued throughout the weekend and into this week.

The grass fire spread to a pile of mixed waste and resulted in the fire covering five acres at its height. 70 firefighters and ten fire engines from Wennington, Hornchurch and Dagenham fire stations were deployed to the blaze and made ?steady progress', remaining at the scene throughout the weekend.

On Monday diggers were sent to assist firefighters put out ?deep seated pockets of the fire' which has resulted in large quantities of visible smoke coming from the fire which has understandably raised concerns from local residents over air pollution and toxicity.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) have advised residents living nearby to keep doors and windows closed as a precaution against the smoke.

Jon Cruddas MP commented "I commend the work of our local fire fighters, who have done a fantastic job so far trying to contain the fire in tough conditions. I have had a number of emails from residents living nearby who are rightfully concerned about the temporary impact on air quality. I have contacted the council today seeking assurances that the site is being investigated for potential hazardous pollutants, which I hope the council will relay to residents in the area."
