In December 2013 Dagenham boxing club, with the help of Jon Cruddas MP, local councillors and LBBD finally secured a new lease. Since finalising the terms the club has been very actively sourcing funds to get a 5 year Development Plan off the ground. The new Lease was a key factor in obtaining grant funding.

Recently the club has secured a £50,000 grant from Sport England, with this the club is planning to start major improvement works.

Dan O’Sullivan who runs the club with a team of volunteers commented: “Thanks once again to references from the likes of Jon and other LBBD Council members - we have secured a £50,000 grant from Sport England via the London2012 'Inspired Facilities Fund' which saw the clubs total refurbishment get started this week.”

New Changing rooms, toilets (including a new Disabled toilet), plus a Disabled chair lift for the entrance stairwell, a new sprung sports flooring, Fire Doors, Fire alarms, CCTV coverage throughout the gym and entrance/exits. Plus the installation of a new 18' Boxing Ring with matching punchbags and a full re-paint (by Community Payback).

After a few very uncertain years, the ‘Daggers’ (Dagenham Amateur Boxing Club) have secured a long term future in the area and have started producing Champions (Kerim Agius - National Junior ABA Champion for 2014, pictured with his Golden Gloves and MP Jon Cruddas), and now they are in the process of creating a World class amateur boxing facility which will host Regional and National Teams.

Dagenham Amateur Boxing Club won the 2013 Sports Club of the Year Award. Dan O’Sullivan was recently awarded Freedom of the Borough in recognition of his dedication to the local community, his work at the club, his work as a police officer and his commitment to improving the lives of the local youth. Dan O’Sullivan was also nominated by LBBD Sports Development Team as a Baton Bearer for the Queens Baton Relay - in the build up to the Commonwealth Games in Scotland later this year.

Jon Cruddas Commented: “It’s always a pleasure to pop by the Boxing Club. The young boxers are making real progress, and with the new grant from Sport England I can see the club producing many more champions from Dagenham in the future. Dan is doing a sterling job and I can’t wait to see what the club looks like when it’s refurbished, the club is a real anchor in the community for the local youth and over the years has become a real asset to Dagenham.”
