The recent frontbench mini-shuffle within Labour has seen Peter Hain replaced by Owen Smith, and Liam Byrne stripped of his lead running the policy review; the most exciting change so far. In a move that promises to shake up the Party and refocus on grounding its basic values, Jon Cruddas MP for Dagenham and Rainham has been newly appointed to review, observe and coordinate the labour policies in the near future.
Jon Cruddas has always been associated with big ideas within the Labour Party often pushing boundaries. During an interview six months ago he was critical of Labours policies: “There's no ideology. There's no attempt to construct a hegemony, a new political project or language. It is totally fragmented. They have to be orchestrated. There has to be a conductor.”
Ed Miliband has said: "Jon Cruddas is already known as one of the most radical and deepest thinkers in the party. As the policy review enters its next phase, I look forward to him bringing his energy and new ideas."
Jon has released this statement as a response to his new role:
“It came as a total surprise but is a great privilege and cannot wait to get stuck in. I’m determined to pull together a programme which will help get labour back into power at the earliest possible time.
It’s a big responsibility but I’m determined to do it to the best of my ability, based around the hopes and experiences of my constituents in Dagenham and Rainham – and will be talking extensively to local people about what needs to be done.
I would also like to thank people locally for all their kind messages of support.”
