Rainham Foodbank: More Than Food

Jon Cruddas MP was recently contacted by Rainham Foodbank in regard to their “More Than Food” service. Rainham Foodbank is part of Trussell Trust’s UK wide network of over 460 foodbanks, working to tackle food poverty and hunger across the UK.

They are a Christian charity that partner with local communities, providing non-judgemental help to people in crisis. They provide at least 3 days food for people in emergency and crisis and a number of frontline care professionals including GP’s, schools and Helplines can refer individuals.

Rainham Foodbank want to see more people helped out of crisis and fewer people needing foodbanks in the future. They are working together with the Trussell Trust to develop new ways to help people out of crisis through programmes like “More Than Food”.

The “More Than Food” programme enhances community resilience with services beyond food provision including emotional stability, language development and skill acquisition. Some of the ways they aim to do this is through offering counselling services, English lessons for refugees and sewing projects. With the support of the Trussell Trust they have also commissioned the services of two additional Benefit and Debt advisors from the Citizens Advice Bureau.

Jon Cruddas MP: “The Conservative Government has created the worst cost-of-living crisis seen since the 1980’s. People nation-wide are struggling with rising costs. The work of Rainham Foodbank is truly admirable, not only providing emergency support for those in need of food but trying to tackle these issues at their route through their “More Than Food” programme.
