MP & Councillors Launch Campaign into Road Safety

Yesterday evening a man in his twenties was killed in a traffic accident near the Eastbrook pub, Dagenham. There have been a number of accidents relating to vehicles on this particular stretch of road over the years, which spans from the Eastbrook pub to just past Eastbrook Comprehensive School. Back at the end of 2015 former council leader and local resident Charlie Fairbrass MBE was knocked down and hospitalised by a vehicle.

Following last night's accident Jon Cruddas MP and local Labour councillors Mick McCarthy, and Tony Ramsay are launching an inquiry into the safety of the stretch, which will involve speaking to residents living in the surrounding area.

The suggestion by local representatives is to have two speed bumps installed ? one either side of the school, preventing vehicles from speeding in the vicinity.

Cllr Tony Ramsay commented: "Over the past year many residents have raised their concerns about speeding traffic on Dagenham Road, and I think it is time the council took a serious look at this patch which is right outside a school. In the coming weeks I will be liaising with local residents to address the growing concern."

Cllr Mick McCarthy who is also a Governor at Eastbrook Comprehensive added: "I regularly travel down Dagenham Road on my way through to Rush Green and am appalled by the speed some of the cars travel at. Despite crossing facilities, there is an increasing risk to school children arriving and leaving Eastbrook Comp. Both Tony and I will be campaigning for better safety measures."

Whilst the details of last night's accident are not yet known, residents of the area have taken to social media raising the issue that Dagenham Road is like ?a race track' of an evening, and it was ?only a matter of time' before a serious accident took place.

Jon Cruddas MP has also backed the call for speedbumps: "Over the coming weeks I will be supporting local councillors in their campaign to have speed bumps installed either side of the school. I have seen the concerns raised by residents online and last night's accident, along with previous incidents confirms that this stretch of road needs serious attention from the council."
