East Hall Lane Update

Since 2017 Jon Cruddas MP has been fighting alongside residents to resolve numerous issues that have continued to occur down East Hall Lane in Wennington, Rainham. Last week Jon was made aware of a substantial amount of fly tipping which had occurred down East Hall Lane and contacted Havering Council.

Today Jon was provided with a response which states the following: "The Lane is scheduled to be cleared of fly tipping starting from next week, week commencing 27th April 2020, and it is estimated it will take approximately a week to clear."

East Hall Lane has also suffered a huge amount of damage due to heavy duty vehicles using the lane itself. Jon Cruddas's Havering Coordinator Fay Hough put this to Havering Council and received the following response:

"It was decided to close East Hall Lane due to a combination of reasons, the amount of fly tipping that is deposited there on a regular basis, also the condition of the carriageway caused by the heavy vehicles that are constantly using this lane. Highways have tried various patch repairs in various locations between the entrance to where the concrete plant was operating from, to the exit at New Road. This is a small lane that was never constructed to take the weight of vehicles, and any repairs they undertake will fail quickly whilst these heavy vehicles still access the road."

"It is a narrow small lane with no edge restraints, if the Highways Department were to reconstruct the carriageway, they would also need to install kerbing along the length of the lane, then reconstruct the carriageway to a far greater depth than it is currently, enabling the road to bear the weight of these large vehicles. Considering the fact this would then in no way help prevent the fly tipping issues, they took the decision to close the road while Havering determine whether or not the road should be permanently closed in the same fashion as Sunnings Lane and Little Gerpins Lane. There is currently Temporary Traffic Regulation Order in place for the road closure which is valid for another 5 months."

Jon Cruddas said: "I am happy to see that Havering Council are taking this matter seriously. I have spoken to numerous Wennington residents over the years and visited East Hall Lane myself where I witnessed first-hand the damage to the road, and the fly tipping that continuously occurs here. There are other issues regarding East Hall Lane that my team and I are liaising with the council to resolve, but for now I'm happy the ball is rolling. A big thank you to the Wennington residents who have continuously kept me informed."
