Christmas Message 2022

It’s that time of year again and I would like to wish all my constituents across Dagenham and Rainham a very merry Christmas and best wishes for a happy and healthy new year. Christmas is a special time of year for us all to reflect on the last 12 months and take stock.

Like many recent years we had both celebration and loss in 2022. It was truly amazing to see neighbours coming together across the country to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee this summer – a once in a lifetime event that brought out the best in local people. However, a few short months later with the sad passing of HM Queen Elizabeth II we became a nation in mourning.

Locally, during July’s heatwave, we suffered two devastating fires where twenty-eight families lost everything, but it was heart-warming to see our local community rally around to offer support and comfort to their neighbours. The outpouring of support was immense.

It has been a turbulent year in politics which has seen three Conservative Prime Ministers crashing from crisis to crisis, translating into a broken economy and a rising cost of living with everything going up except wages for people in areas like ours.

As always, there remains so much to do locally. In the new year I will keep pressing the government to allow the promised station at Beam Park. Talk of ‘levelling up’ is no good when government decisions prevent regeneration and good quality local jobs. Another priority for me over the coming year will be campaigning to get investment into our local GP and primary health care services.

2023 is a new year, and a chance for a fresh start as I continue to work towards a transformative Labour Government alongside Dagenham & Rainham’s new Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Margaret Mullane. There is a lot to be hopeful about in the coming year with a coronation to look forward to in May, and the completion of the film studios at Dagenham East next December which will bring hundreds of creative opportunities for our young people. Not only this, but we will also be another year closer to delivering London’s historic wholesale markets at Dagenham Dock which will put Dagenham at the heart of trade in London.

Times will be difficult for many, but there are positives on the horizon. In the meantime, I wish all my constituents a peaceful festive season. My office will be closed 21/12 – 05/01 but emergency casework will still be undertaken.
