A playgroup/pre-school in Rainham that was founded in 1971 is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Brenda Dorman, the original founder of Chandlers Chatters playgroup/pre-school, was inspired to open a playgroup because of her own children. Once she found a setting, she had to become qualified to be able to run the group, so attended afternoon sessions in childcare to get her qualifications. 50 years on and Sue Allen (who has managed the school for the past four years but worked there for many more) has also seen her own children attend the school.
Some of Sue's favourite memories over the years include celebrating Prince William and The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton's wedding - inviting all the parents and staff for the occasion. Other cherished memories include their yearly sports day for all the families to enjoy and regularly taking older children to an end of year outing as they come to the end of their time at the pre-school.
Sue's plans for Chandlers Chatters are to continue the high level of care and support they provide at the pre-school so the children can continue to thrive. Sue also aims to improve the group wherever she can, so the children have the best start in life feeling safe and secure in the group's environment.
The group are always happy to accept toys but are limited to space as they are a ‘pack away' setting. The pre-school receive help with paper form a local company in Ferry lane, Rainham which is a big help. Most of the children who come through to the setting come through recommendation and most children's names are put down from birth. They also, always have a very long waiting list. Parsonage Farm School who are Chandlers Chatters ‘feeder school' also recommend the pre-school.
