Autism Awareness Week, Visit to DABD

On Monday 27th of March, day one of Autism Awareness Week, Havering Coordinator Fay Hough visited DABD in Dagenham to find out more about their services and why they play a vital role in our community. People may face barriers in life for several reasons ? whether it's disability (physical and sensory), unemployment, poverty, isolation, poor health and lack of work or training. DABD want to break down the barriers that can prevent people from living the life they would choose and encourage them to be as independent as they want to be. The services that DABD offer include everything from welfare benefits advice and support to find work through to personal care, independent living support and accessible transport.

When speaking to Sam Norgate (Personal Support Service Lead,) Fay was impressed by the new ?Buddy Club' soon to be named ?Kids Patch Club' that DABD offer. Children from 5-18 can attend three venues over Redbridge, Barking and Dagenham and Havering to access this Saturday club which works as respite for the parents of children with special needs. The children not only have a centre they can attend to spend time with their buddies, but also have the chance to attend days out organised by DABD for an affordable price.

Jon Cruddas MP Said: "It is evident that DABD play an important role in our community for children and adults with disabilities, as well as for vulnerable people. The work that continues to happen through this charity is inspiring and gives hope to families struggling to cope. I'll continue to support this charity and look forward to working alongside them in the future."

Fay Hough, Havering Coordinator said: "As a parent of a child with a disability I was uplifted to witness the hard work and dedication that is constantly given by DABD to improve the lives of those with needs. I am proud to have such a fantastic charity based in our community and will continue to support them through their journey."

Their brand-new website launched this week where members of the community can access a portal of information that can improve their lives and their wellbeing. Find out more here: https://www.dabd.org.uk/
