Autism Awareness Week, Tree Tops Day Project

On Monday 27th of March, day one of Autism Awareness Week, Havering Coordinator Fay Hough visited Tree Tops Day Project in Rainham. Tree Tops is a day project for adults with learning disabilities which opened in 2010. They provide a stimulating environment where people can participate in different activities and realise their full potential. Adults can leave site every day and attend leisure activities such as swimming and bingo, as well as learning important life skills such as shopping, cooking and hands on money skills.

Tracey Coombe, manager of Tree Tops Day Project spoke passionately of the adults that attend her provision whilst showing Fay around the premises. Adults have facilities on site such as a sensory room, a computer and music room, a sensory garden, a classroom, a leisure and eating area and a large kitchen. Tracey informed Fay of the fantastic plans herself and her team have for the future of Tree Tops which includes a brand-new house in Billericay ? purpose built to teach clients home skills such as making the bed, cleaning, cooking, maintenance and more. A small shop will be built on the same land as the house which will allow clients to learn employee skills also.

Jon Cruddas MP said: "It's great to have such a productive provision for adults with disabilities. The work and commitment that continues to happen at Tree Tops is inspiring. This country is in dire need of more provisions for adults with disabilities and I am proud to have Tree Tops in our community."

Fay Hough, Havering Coordinator said: "I was very impressed with the way Tree Tops is managed, the staff was extremely welcoming and the adults who attend seemed very happy. I was lucky enough to speak to a few of the adults in attendance and they spoke highly of the day project, it was great to see them so relaxed and content. Manager Tracey Coombe is a passionate person with her client's best interests at heart."
