Eyesore gardens on the move

The battle against eyesore front gardens is spreading further a-field to include two new wards.

Eastbrook ward in Dagenham and Eastbury in Barking will now come under the spotlight from Barking and Dagenham Council's team of Eyesore officers. The taskforce, made up of experienced environmental health officers and street wardens, will be carrying on the good work they've been doing in south Dagenham for the last three months.

Official government figures show that pupils in Barking and Dagenham's secondary schools have achieved record breaking GCSE results for 2009. 

Jon welcomed the news that Barking and Dagenham Council have gained planning permission for Phase 1 of New Build Council Housing. The Labour-led Borough has long recognised the need for new build housing in the area. Thanks to lobbying from local people and their MP, the Government have allowed Councils to use the surplus on our local housing rent account to invest in build for local people.


The Financial Times today cites Barking and Dagenham's Labour council as one of the most innovative local authorities in Britain for combatting teen unemployment.

Reporting on the handful of local councils that had bucked the national trend and consistently reduced the number of young people not in education, employment or training (NEET), the paper praised the borough's initiative to identify "NEET risks" early on and provide support.

Today's Evening Standard reveals the Tories' new NHS policy, with funding being shifted to boroughs that the party deems neediest.

The party released a list of London boroughs that they are planning to target with new money - but Barking and Dagenham didn't make the cut, with boroughs such as Hammersmith in west London prioritised instead.
