The Agboola Award for Creative Writing

Earlier this week, a constituent contacted Jon about a fantastic opportunity for young students to express themselves and tap into their creativity by entering a writing competition entitled the Agboola Award for Creative Writing in Schools. This award encourages students to engage in the world of story-telling and allows them a chance to be inspired both by the world around them, and their own personal imaginations. Jon is eager to support this opportunity to engage local schools in the community, highlight the arts, and promote the valuable skill of creative writing among young students.

Students may submit either a piece of poetry (not to exceed 500 words) or a short story (not to exceed 2000 words), with no theme for the competition as a way to stimulate maximum creativity. Students can enter by speaking to their English teachers, who will then be able to submit the work on the student's behalf. There are two age groups for the competition- the first including students between the ages of 11 ? 14, and the second including students between the ages of 15 ? 17. The entry period runs from 01/05/2017 to 01/07/2017, with the winner announced on 15/09/2017. Submitted works will be judged on creativity, use of language, and uniqueness.

The current prize for this award is £50 as provided by Aaron Agboola, local school governor and founder of the Agboola Award for Creative Writing in Schools, however we are eager to seek out local businesses to invest, thus increasing the prize amount and supporting this wonderful competition. We are looking forward to welcoming the first-ever Agboola Award for Creative Writing in Schools, as our borough may just be fostering the next J.K. Rowling or T.S. Elliot!
