Local MP lends support to TUC campaign

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) have launched a campaign, Dying to Work, that aims to protect the jobs of the terminally ill.  The Equality Act 2010 does not currently prevent employers from dismissing those with a terminal diagnosis if they fail a capability assessment that has been ‘reasonably’ adjusted.

Foodbanks call for direct DWP hotline, as new figures show half a million emergency food parcels distributed by Trussell Trust foodbanks in six months.

  • More than 500,000 three day emergency food parcels distributed to people in crisis in first half of the year – over 188,500 to children
  • Issues with benefits account for 44 per cent of all referrals
  • Charity calls for foodbank telephone ‘hotline’ to local Job Centres to support people in crisis more quickly and efficiently, reducing negative impact on mental wellbeing

Proposed cuts to ESA - local impact

Yesterday evening the House of Lords voted to stop the government in their tracks yet again. The government was defeated in the Lords over plans to cut ESA (Employment and Support Allowance) by £29.05 per week; from £102.15 to £73.10. This money helps support some of the most vulnerable people in society, helping those who are disabled or too sick and unfit for work.

Based on information provided by Macmillan which is publically available via the DWP, there are 520 constituents that will be effected by the implementation of this policy in Dagenham & Rainham.

September unemployment statistics for Dagenham & Rainham

The total number of unemployed claimants in Dagenham and Rainham constituency in September 2015 was 1,527. This represents a rate of 3.1% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64, the 191st highest of the 650 UK constituencies. (1st = highest claimant rate, 650th = lowest claimant rate.) The equivalent UK claimant rate was 2.5%.

This includes 1,454 people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance and 73 people who were claiming Universal Credit but were not in employment. Some of these Universal Credit claimants may no longer be seeking work.
