The uneven impact of welfare reform – a new report

Last month a new report was published using research from Sheffield Hallam University, Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Oxfam. The report highlights the effects of pre-2015 welfare reforms and the anticipated impact of further reform across the United Kingdom. It is estimated that new reforms will take in the region of £13bn a year from claimants by 2020-21.

Local MP supports RSPCA puppy campaign

The RSPCA have launched a puppy breeding and trafficking campaign and are calling on the government to tackle the unlicensed breeding and sale of puppies in England.  This comes in response to the rise in sick, under-age and dying puppies being trafficked into and sold in the UK each year. The RSPCA received over 3,500 calls on puppy farms in 2015, with many of these complaining that their puppies had become ill after they had been bought.

Tax Credit Cut consultation

Tax credit changes currently being debated in parliament are set to leave thousands of working people across Dagenham & Rainham £1,300 a year worse off. Last week local MP Jon Cruddas joined 294 other MPs in opposing the Tax Credit Bill, and last night (26.10.15) the House of Lords demanded major changes to the bill – however George Osborne is still trying to push the policies through.

Jon Cruddas MP: "The changes to the welfare and council tax benefts that were intorduced this month are hitting the local community hard. Many constituents have already raised their concerns through my office. I would be much obliged if you would take a few moments to fill in the survey below. Your views and opinions surrounding the 'bedroom tax' will be invaluable in the coming months when we look at the national impact."National Housing Federation statistics reveal that 1,216 households will be hit by the government’s ‘Bedroom Tax’ locally in Dagenham, Rainham, South Hornchurch and Elm Park. It is predicted that these households will lose an average of £728 a year. The report is broken down by constituency and highlights that the Bedroom Tax will hit 660,000 households nationwide, two thirds of them home to someone with a disability.

Dagenham and Rainham MP Jon Cruddas has made a scathing attack on new rules in the Budget that will slash £2.6billion from parents’ incomes by making it harder to qualify for working tax credits.
