Remembrance Sunday 2016

Nov 16, 2016

Last weekend was Remembrance Sunday, and with a long service history across Dagenham and Rainham there were a number of remembrance events. This year Jon Cruddas MP for Dagenham and Rainham attended the Rainham service. This year was bigger than ever, with what looked like a thousand local residents; who alongside veterans, local cadets and scouts, and dignitaries – marched down Upminster Road South from the working men’s club to the War Memorial in Rainham Village.

New flags for Dagenham War Memorials

Over the past few weeks many residents may have noticed that the Union Jack has been missing from both the Dagenham Heathway War Memorial at the corner of Church Elm Lane, and the Dagenham Village War Memorial by Dagenham Parish Church.

The flags at both sites are normally replaced every two years in November prior to Remembrance Day to prevent them appearing too tattered during the service. However earlier this year it was noticed that the new flags were becoming quite worn a year ahead of scheduled replacement.

Another year passes and in three short months we will be remembering, as we do every year, that our liberties are built on the sacrifices of those that went before us. Remembrance Sunday this year falls on 13th November. Dagenham has a long and proud service history and has traditionally marked the day with a number of services across the borough. None more famous than the procession in Dagenham Village, led by the Dagenham Girl Pipers.
