Honorary Alderman Fred Jones MBE passes away

Fred Jones passed away in hospital earlier this week at the age of 88, four years after he was made an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to the borough. Born in Liverpool, he moved to Barking in 1932 and was first elected as a councillor in 1964, remaining in office until May 2006.

He was appointed a Freeman of the Borough in 1985 and served as Mayor of Barking and Dagenham for the year 1990/91. In 2006 he was made an Honorary Alderman in recognition of his outstanding service to the borough.

Dagenham funeral director Jeremy West has been awarded an MBE at Buckingham Palace. The owner of West & Coe, which has operated in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham since 1903 was awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire by HRH Duke Of Cambridge for his services to the funeral industry and to the local community.

Earlier on this year in June two local residents were recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for their outstanding contributions to society.

Last night (22.11.2012) Jon Cruddas MP for Dagenham and Rainham, The Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, Anthony Ramsey and many of the local Councillors came together to thank and congratulate Rita and Fred for all the work they have done over the years.

A group of individuals from Barking and Dagenham have been recognised for their outstanding contributions to society, and have been named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list to receive MBE's.
