The Coalition Government has ditched Labour's pledge to regulate the private rented sector to prevent tennants suffering from a minority of bad landlords. Jon highlights a recent report from Shelter on the issue and sought assurances from the Government.

Labour offers councils radical new housing deal

Labour Housing Minister John Healey today offered councils a far reaching new deal giving them the freedom to fund and run their council homes, without central Government subsidy.

In announcing the deal, Mr Healey set out plans to dismantle the current (HRA subsidy) system of funding council housing in 177 local authority areas.

The deal will release at least ten per cent more money in every council for maintaining and managing their homes. And it will create the funding capacity to build over 10,000 new council homes a year.


New council housing in Dagenham

Jon welcomed the news that Barking and Dagenham Council have gained planning permission for Phase 1 of New Build Council Housing. The Labour-led Borough has long recognised the need for new build housing in the area. Thanks to lobbying from local people and their MP, the Government have allowed Councils to use the surplus on our local housing rent account to invest in build for local people.


First new council houses built

Jon inspected the first council houses to be built in Barking and Dagenham for twenty five years, on a site visit at Bell Farm Avenue. He is continuing to campaign for the council to get the funding and powers it needs to builds the next generation of council homes for local people.
