A group of pensioners has condemned the government’s plan to freeze tax allowances, with one protesting that a £5 rise a week in state pensions would only buy them “two packets of fish fingers”.

Dagenham and Rainham MP Jon Cruddas has made a scathing attack on new rules in the Budget that will slash £2.6billion from parents’ incomes by making it harder to qualify for working tax credits.
