Jon Cruddas MP supports World Cancer Day 2017

Jon Cruddas MP for Dagenham and Rainham incorporating South Hornchurch and Elm Park attended an event in Parliament on Wednesday 1 February to show his support for World Cancer Day on Saturday 4 February, 2017. 

Jon met with representatives from seven of the UK’s leading charities who have joined forces to unite the nation and help people affected by cancer.

MP attends parliamentary reception for Cancer52

On 20th April Jon Cruddas MP attended a parliamentary reception organised by Cancer52, a coalition of more than 80 charities representing rare and less common cancers. The reception was hosted and addressed by Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer (APPGC), John Baron MP.

Havering Breast Screening Unit update

Since June 2015 Jon Cruddas MP has been contacted by a number of female constituents from across Rainham, South Hornchurch and Elm Park regarding the closure of their local Breast Screening Unit. The Screening Unit, located at the Victoria Centre on Pettits Lane closed in May 2015.

New local initiative to improve early cancer diagnosis

Last September a report highlighted that Barking and Dagenham had one of the lowest one-year cancer survival rates in our NHS England Local Region at 62 per cent. At the time of the report Havering was also just falling short of the UK average at 66 per cent.

Local MP for Dagenham and Rainham Jon Cruddas is keen to promote the importance of early diagnosis after learning that thirty per cent of deaths across the area each year are due to cancer.

One-year cancer survival rates in the borough are lowest in the region

A recent publication has shown cancer survival rates in the UK to be low in comparison to neighbouring countries in Europe. The average one-year survival rate for the UK is 68 per cent, as a country with a long established and respectable National Health Service these statistics are not as good as they should be. At the moment, the UK lags far behind its international and European neighbours in cancer survival. By 2020, almost half of people will receive a cancer diagnosis during their lifetime.

Local MP Jon Cruddas has praised a decision made in the Supreme Court last week in which families of people who died after asbestos exposure will now be able to claim compensation.
