Schools encouraged to participate in the Speaker's School Council Awards

Jon Cruddas MP is encouraging local schools in the Dagenham and Rainham area to participate in the Speaker’s School Council Awards- an awards program that seeks to celebrate school council projects that have made a positive impact in their schools and local communities. This award is run by Parliament’s Education Service on behalf of the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Rt. Hon. Jon Bercow MP, and offers schools the unique opportunity to highlight what makes their student councils great, while encouraging democracy and teamwork within the councils themselves. In order to enter, schools complete an online application (see link below) describing a project or achievement they are most proud of- whether that be increasing the number of recycling bins in and around their school, campaigning to save local wildlife, etc. – with no project being too big or too small. Entries will be assessed on how the council used the democratic process in designing the project, the objectives of the project, and how the council then evaluated the impact of the project.

One winner will be awarded in each of the following age categories:

  • Infant Age (4-7)
  • Junior Age (8-11)
  • Secondary Age (12-16)
  • Young Adults (17-19)

The competition ends Friday, May 19th at 5:00pm, after which the winners will be announced and then invited to an awards ceremony in the Speaker’s apartments, where they will be presented their trophy by the Speaker. Let’s encourage our student councils in Dagenham and Rain to make a difference in their schools and communities and create a future they can be proud of – sign up today!

Jon Cruddas MP commented: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the young people in schools all across Dagenham, Rainham, South Hornchurch, and Elm Park. I know that many of our local schools have embarked on innovative community projects over the years and this is an excellent chance not only for the pupils, but for the schools to showcase their work. Best of luck to all those that enter.”
