Plans to dump a 1,500 place Prison on Dagenham have been thrown out by the government after a massive local campaign against it.
Thousands of local people have come together to support Jon Cruddas MP in getting Jack Straw to change his mind over the plans. Jon welcomed the news and has sent messages out to everyone who has helped saying "It wouldn't have happened without you!"
Councillor Mick McCarthy, who took a lead role locally in the campaign said: "We never wanted a prison here and with a lot of hard work from our Labour team, Jon Cruddas MP and local Labour councillors we're not going to get one."
Tory Mayor Boris Johnson owns the land and could have stopped the plans last year - but didn't listen to local people and continued to push for the prison.
The proposed site was between Dagenham and Rainham, and could be an excellent place for regeneration. Local campaigner Denis Breading wants to see investment in the area. "Now we have said ‘No' to the Prison we need to say ‘Yes' to building something positive on the site."
