Napier and New Plymouth House Regeneration

Following the submission of a residents' petition led by local residents and supported by Jon Cruddas MP for Rainham and Dagenham, Havering Council have agreed to the demolition of Napier House and New Plymouth House in Rainham. The promised demolition and development of the site for general needs housing comes as part of the early phase of Havering's Housing Regeneration Programme, which aims to provide around 2,500 new affordable homes in the borough. Residents will be served with Demolition Notices within the coming weeks and Havering Council have created a web page devoted to updates regarding the Napier and New Plymouth House site in South Hornchurch: https://www3.havering.gov.uk/Pages/ServiceChild/Napier-and-New-Plymouth....

It is proposed that a development partner will be appointed by the council during 2017 after which design consultations with residents and stakeholders may begin. Havering Council forecasts that construction work is likely to commence around late 2018.

Jon commented: "This is a real result for residents of New Plymouth and Napier House, I have been liaising between residents and the council on the issue of regeneration since back in 2013. The two blocks hold their own close knit communities, and I hope that current residents will be on a priority list to return after development. This has been a long time coming."

Whilst the regeneration of many estates within Havering has been warmly welcomed, Jon Cruddas MP is standing alongside the community in opposition to any applications to build housing on the green adjacent to the Dover's Farm Estate, just opposite Napier and New Plymouth House. A recent proposal for 32 properties to be built on this green space has led residents to apply for village green status to protect open areas for the community. The site, which has been in use as a community resource for the last 68 years, also commemorated the contribution of servicemen from New Zealand. Jon Cruddas supports the residents' campaign to preserve this important space as a village green saying; "This campaign isn't just about a patch of grass, it is about the future of a community."
