  • MP joins forces with Thames Water to raise awareness of sewer blockage
  • Demonstration proves “flushable” wipes don’t degrade in sewers, with only the three Ps flushable: poo, pee and toilet paper
  • 3,452 blockages cleared from Dagenham and Rainham sewers in last three years while 13 properties have been flooded with sewage

After 18 months of campaigning, which included a survey to all 30,000 households in Dagenham, over 4,000 petition signatures, 33 video testimonies from members of the public, and a candle lit vigil which attracted over 400 local residents – the future of the iconic Dagenham Civic Centre has been secured.

March unemployment statistics for Dagenham & Rainham

The total number of unemployed claimants in Dagenham and Rainham constituency in March 2016 was 1,608. This represents a rate of 3.2% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64, the 181st highest of the 650 UK constituencies. (1st = highest claimant rate, 650th = lowest claimant rate.) The equivalent UK claimant rate was 2.5%.

This includes 1,406 people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance and 202 people who were claiming Universal Credit but were not in employment. Some of these Universal Credit claimants may no longer be seeking work.

Awareness for Autism protest

This Wednesday Rainham & Wennington resident Fay Hough will be marching in protest to Andrew Rosindell’s office, the Member of Parliament for Romford. Fay is hoping to be joined by over 50 local parents from across Havering all in support of the campaign that she launched back in 2014; ‘Awareness for Autism’.

Oxbridge Access Scheme

An organisation called Oxbridge Applications is currently promoting their fantastic Access Scheme – the scheme is designed to provide state school students with exceptional opportunities to improve their chances of attending England’s most prestigious Universities, Oxford and Cambridge. The program provides 120 state school students scholarship assistance from Oxbridge graduates every year. 

The access scheme puts state school candidates in contact with Oxbridge-graduates to support them in every aspect of the application:

The uneven impact of welfare reform – a new report

Last month a new report was published using research from Sheffield Hallam University, Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Oxfam. The report highlights the effects of pre-2015 welfare reforms and the anticipated impact of further reform across the United Kingdom. It is estimated that new reforms will take in the region of £13bn a year from claimants by 2020-21.

Resident parking issue in Whalebone Ward

Jon Cruddas Member of Parliament for Dagenham and Rainham has been contacted by a number of residents in Whalebone Ward regarding the ongoing parking problems there. Over 150 local residents have presented Jon with a petition highlighting that commuters using Chadwell Heath Station use much of the nearby space to park their cars up before heading to work, and leave them there till late in the evening resulting in residents not be able to park in their own road.
