Community Focus: Dagenham Amateur Boxing Club

The club has now secured a new Sponsor in REDS10 - a London Olympic Legacy Corporation which offers apprenticeship, training and employment opportunities.

Subject to the new 21 year lease being completed in time, we are currently awaiting the outcome of an 'Inspired Facility Grant' of nearly £50k, which will be used to update and refurnish the clubs aging facilities. We hope to have a new sports floor fitted, new Air Conditioning Units, New Fire doors and Fire alarm, refitted Changing rooms and CCTV in and around the club.

We have our 1st boxing show of the season booked for Dagenham & Redbridge Football Club on the evening of Friday 18th October 2013. The first bell will sound at 7.30pm and we'll have an array of boxers from our groups. The youngest will be rising unbeaten star - Tariq Agius who is being touted as a future star. Older brother Kerim will also be in action, and he has set his sights on National and International Honours.

Our crop of over 40 licensed amateur boxers train 3 times a week at the gym, and they also have strict diets and running programs to follow.

Since the London2012 Olympics, we've had a huge increase in the number of youngsters wanting a place at the gym - it’s a hive of activity every weekday evening and Sunday mornings. The biggest increase has been the participation of females who have been flocking to the gym. We now have one of the biggest groups of licensed female boxers in the country - Exclusive Female only groups are being lined up for early in the new year (2014). I think we have Olympic Gold Medallist Nicola Adams to thank for this!

In our senior boxers class - we've got some great potential. Angolan born - Jose Lopes and Perry Hollland are our best hopes for National success in the Senior (Adult) Championships - whilst Youth's Dymtry Nachas and Reid Hill look like good candidates for some honours.

In our 'Winkles' class - our Nursery, we have waiting lists in operation as the demand is so high. Again, plenty of future stars amongst those youngsters.

For the 7th year in a row we delivered the nationally recognised 'Contender AmBox Non Contact Summer Boxing Scheme' for kids aged 7-17 years. As usual, it was oversubscribed and we were kept very busy. 20 of the kids were awarded FREE membership at the club as an exit route to the scheme.

We have boxers entered in each of the National Championships - and I really believe we could end the season with a handful of Titles, that start with the Female Championships on 3rd October where Charlotte Gill, Paris Smith and Sharon Christiansen start the long road to glory. Then it's the Youth's - Conor McNicholas, Reid Hill and Dimytry Nachas - who bid for honours in the National Ambition Boxing Championships on 13th October at Harlow Dog Track. That's a day after the Senior National Novices get underway in Harold Hill with a handful of Daggers entered.

Once the lease is signed, sealed and delivered - we'll be putting our 5 Year Development plan into action - constantly improving the voluntary service we provide.

And all this largely thanks to people like MP Jon Cruudas - who have battled long and hard on our behalf, to secure a very bright future to the boxers and Coaches at Dagenham (Police & Community) Boxing Club.
